3 Game-Changing Lessons That Transformed My Business

Have you ever said to yourself, "I'm not doing this anymore"? It usually takes significant pain to get to that point, right? I want to share the three real game changers in my restoration business. They all started with that feeling, and here they are:

1. The Financial Piece of the Business. I realized that I was less profitable than many of my peers in the industry, and I knew I could be. It all started with a need for more understanding. I needed to clarify how to set up my books to get meaningful data out of them. This data would allow me to make informed decisions to manage the business's profitability. But I knew that I needed understanding to be able to get there. So, getting a solid grasp on my financials was the first game changer.

2. Team Engagement. Early on, I was following my annual planning ritual in a coffee shop, setting goals for the following year. Then I had this light bulb moment and said, "I'm not doing this anymore. This is ridiculous." Why was I spending time setting goals that nobody cared about? It hit me—they were my goals, not our goals. How can you have team engagement if you don't involve the team in the planning process? We all needed to get excited about what we wanted to accomplish personally and professionally together. It wasn't just my plan; it was our plan. This shift led to a much different feeling of team engagement and a much different feeling for me as the owner—I wasn't doing all the thinking anymore.

3. Setting Clear Expectations and Holding the Team Accountable. What a huge change it was when I realized that you need to know where the target is to hit the target. It’s pretty basic, right? But that light bulb didn’t go off for me for quite some time. Having documented, very clear expectations for each team member and having two to five key metrics on a scorecard that they knew every week if they were on track or off track was a game changer.
