Can a Business Leader Truly Keep Things Rolling All By Themselves?
Dec 04, 2023Hey there, it's Scott Miller. A client recently hit me with a great question - out of a deep sense of frustration: "Can a leader keep things moving forward all by themselves?" I won’t lie - sometimes it feels like you’re taking on the world all by yourself.
If you don’t know who I am, I’m Scott Miller, the owner of thegrowthleague.com. I’m making these videos to help restoration business owners get more profitable, reduce the chaos, and build something of great value they can sell someday when they are ready to move on. I also am hopeful that you’ll watch this video and take action - even if it’s simply booking a call with me to delve deeper.
When the question came up, it made me think of an old John Maxwell quote that always made me smile - “If you think you're leading, but no one is following, then you are only taking a walk.” - John Maxwell.
Here’s my perspective, chunked down into three core principles I believe are crucial for every business owner:
- Own the FUTURE: You set the vision. Yes, as a leader, you have the unique role of defining the future of your business. That means having foresight, adaptability, and the ability to rally your team towards a shared goal.
- Own the TEAM: It's a collective effort. You’ve built a team for a reason. Harness that collective strength, ensure everyone’s tuned in, and drive towards common objectives. When everyone’s on board, the journey becomes smoother.
- Own the BOTTOMLINE: You've got to know your numbers. While vision and teamwork are vital, a leader is also tested by how well they understand their financials. It's the compass that informs every decision you make.
It's on you to own the future, the team, and the numbers, but here's the thing - you don’t have to feel isolated in that responsibility and you certainly shouldn’t be shouldering it all on your own. Lean on your team, rely on trusted advisors, and remember, there are others out there, like me, ready to walk alongside you.
