This Is The #1 ENEMY In Your Restoration Business!

This Is The #1 ENEMY In Your Restoration Business!

business tips Aug 13, 2024

What do you think the number one enemy in the restoration industry is today? If there were five or six of us out for dinner or drinks, and I asked this question, here's what I would hear:

"Oh, it's the insurance carriers. It's State Farm, Liberty Mutual, Allstate, and all the other carriers. They're our biggest enemy."

Another might say, "No, no, it's the TPAs. TPAs are ruining the industry. It's Alacrity, Contractor Connection, Sedgwick, Lyons Bridge, and all these TPAs."

Someone else would argue, "It's the third-party review companies. They're killing us. They're beating us up, nickel and diming us. They've made it impossible to do business. It's terrible."

Then another voice might say, "Nah, you know what? Those are all challenges, but it's my employees. They're so lazy. I've never had a worse team. Terrible. You just can't get people like you used to."

I would argue that you're all wrong. The biggest enemy, not just in restoration but in any business or even in one's personal life, is INACTION.

As a business owner, you can blame endless people and companies, but you can also take action. When you think about it, your peers—whether they are insurance-friendly or 100% anti-insurance—all have the same challenges. Everyone has the same challenges, and yet, some are wildly successful. Some of my clients and industry friends have significant six and even seven-figure incomes. Some are experiencing seven and even eight-figure exits. Others have businesses where they're barely making any money and certainly don't have anything that's in shape to sell.

What's the difference? I would argue it's inaction and playing the blame game.

Take action. Think about all these challenges that you have.

Some would say, "It's my area. Scott, you don't understand. Our area is different from every other area in the country." And I would say that I've got clients all over the country, and I've had industry friends, and you're right, things are different in every area of the country. There are many similarities. Some areas are very densely populated with restoration companies. Some are not. Some are very rural and have a unique set of challenges. Every market is a bit different and comes with its own unique set of challenges.

However, every market has wildly successful restoration businesses in it, so you might as well be one of them. This doesn't happen by playing the blame game. It happens by taking action.

So, what are you going to do to start making progress in some of these areas that you're struggling with? Sales, profitability, cashflow, building a team that gets things done and is really engaged in the business—put together a simple action plan for at least one of those areas and start making progress today.
